What’s it doing?
Pick the symptom. We’ll tell you how urgent it is, what to do right now, and what we do when we arrive.
- Likely cause
- Current leaking to earth on one circuit. Usually a damp outdoor socket, a failing immersion heater or a cable chewed behind an appliance. The RCD on the consumer unit (the fuse box, if yours is older) is doing its job.
- How urgent

Safe to leave off overnight. Not safe to keep resetting.
- Do this now
- Unplug everything on the circuit that tripped and reset the RCD. If it holds, plug things back one at a time; the item that trips it is the fault. If it trips with nothing plugged in, leave it off and book.
- What we do on arrival
- We split the board and insulation-test each circuit at 500 V. We expect IR ≥ 1 MΩ; a reading of 0.4 MΩ tells us a cable is damp or damaged, and which one.
- Likely cause
- A loose neutral at the fitting or the board, or a leading-edge dimmer driving LED lamps. If the whole house dims when the kettle goes on, the loose connection is at the supply, and that is urgent.

- Do this now
- Note whether it is one light, one room or the whole house, and whether it happens when something heavy switches on. Don’t keep tightening the lamp.
- What we do on arrival
- We re-terminate and test, measure volt drop under load and swap dimmers for trailing-edge. We expect under 3% volt drop on a lighting circuit; more than that points at the joint.
- Likely cause
- A break in the ring: a loose conductor at a socket upstream, or a blown fuse in a spur. One dead socket with live neighbours is almost always a connection, not a cable.
- How urgent

A ring with a break still works, but one leg of cable now carries a load it was never sized for.
- Do this now
- Check the fused spur and the socket switch, then check whether the sockets either side are dead too. Don’t run an extension lead through a door as a fix.
- What we do on arrival
- End-to-end ring continuity (r1, rn, r2), find the break, remake the joint. We expect R1+R2 around 0.2–0.6 Ω on a kitchen ring; an open circuit on one leg is the break.
- Likely cause
- A loose connection arcing under load: a cooker switch, a shower pull-cord, a socket running a heater. Hot plastic has a smell of its own and it means a terminal is cooking.
- How urgent

Ring 0114 496 0230. If there are flames, get out and ring 999.
- Do this now
- If you can see scorching or smoke, turn off at the main switch. Otherwise turn off that circuit at the board and don’t use it. Don’t open the accessory yourself.
- What we do on arrival
- Thermal check, every accessory on the circuit opened, damaged accessory and cable replaced, Zs and RCD tested before we re-energise. We expect the RCD to trip under 40 ms at 5× IΔn.
- Likely cause
- A supplier fault, a tripped main RCD, or the cut-out fuse at the meter, which only the network may pull. If the whole street is off it is not your installation, and we would be charging you to say so.
- How urgent

- Look at your neighbours’ lights. If it is only you, check the main switch and the RCDs are up. If one won’t stay up with everything unplugged, leave it and ring.
- What we do on arrival
- We test at the origin: incoming supply, main earth, Ze. We expect Ze ≤ 0.35 Ω on a PME supply; anything higher and the conversation is with the network, not with you.
